The Nordøyvegen (the North Island Road) is a Norwegian road project that connects a small group of islands north of Ålesund to the Norwegian mainland. The project includes three subsea tunnels that have a combined length of 13 km (8 mi). To meet the national standards of the tunnels design, customer Unicon AS decided to collaborate with Bekaert to reinforce the permanent lining of the tunnels.

The challenge

The project crosses four fjords with tunnels and bridges and upgrading and re-routing roads on the islands to meet national standards. The requirements for the linings stipulated energy absorption classes E700 and E1000 according to the Norwegian Concrete association publication No. 7.

The solution

In order to create an impermeable skin in medium to tough rock and soil formations, the concrete has been reinforced with Dramix 4D 65/35BG.  15-17 kg/m3 for the layers that needed to meet E700 energy absorption classes and 25-27 kg/ m3 for meeting E1000 energy absorption classes. In total, Bekaert supplied 945 tons of steel fiber reinforcement for this project.
