Bekaert has reached a new milestone in its sustainability journey with the launch of its first solar project in Latin America, installed at the Proalco Malambo plant in Barranquilla, Colombia. With 1 986 rooftop solar panels now in operation, the site is generating renewable electricity on site, turning Bekaert’s sustainability strategy into tangible action on the ground.

The Proalco Malambo plant in Barranquilla, Colombia, is a multi-segment steel wire production site, producing a diversified portfolio serving agriculture, construction, upholstery, energy and utilities and general industrial applications. Almost 200 people work at the site. With a total installed capacity of 1 291 kWp, the installation is expected to generate approximately 1.87 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, covering 25 percent of the plant’s electricity demand. This will result in an estimated reduction of 117 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, directly contributing to Bekaert’s ambition to reduce its environmental footprint and support the transition toward a low-carbon economy.

Project highlights

  • 1 986 rooftop solar panels installed

  • 1 291 kWp installed capacity

  • 1 87 GWh expected renewable electricity generation per year

  • 25% of the plant’s electricity demand covered

  • 467 tons of CO₂ emissions expected to be avoided annually

The project addresses clear operational and energy challenges. Previously, Bekaert’s Malambo plant was fully dependent on external electricity supply in the context of rising energy costs and increasing pressure on the grid. By producing renewable energy on site, the installation improves cost efficiency and strengthens operational resilience, reducing exposure to energy price volatility and helping to mitigate potential supply disruptions.

The project also contributes to Colombia’s national sustainability objectives by supporting the adoption of non-conventional renewable energy sources and reducing emissions. In addition, the use of local suppliers and contractors reinforces its positive impact on the local economy and community.

As the local team highlights, the project stands out not only for its environmental impact, but also for the strong execution behind it.

Fernando Montes, General Manager Proalco, commented: “This project represents a major step forward in our commitment to sustainability. As the largest investment project at our site, it reflects a high level of ambition and was delivered safely over one year. It will make a meaningful difference by reducing emissions, lowering energy costs and strengthening the reliability of our operations.”

Bekaert’s progress in Colombia builds on a broader track record of investments in renewable energy across its global footprint. In recent years, the company has deployed solar installations at sites in Europe and Asia and continues to expand its use of renewable electricity through on-site generation and long-term energy agreements. With the Malambo project, this global approach is now extended to Latin America, demonstrating how Bekaert Bekaert turns its sustainability ambition into local impact while continuing to increase the share of renewable energy in its operations.

Looking ahead, this milestone marks the beginning of a broader renewable rollout in the region. Expansion plans are already underway, with a second phase foreseen at the Muña plant in Bogotá.
