Hydrogen Generation Header

All your Hydrogen Questions Answered

Hydrogen generation is a fast growing market, requesting timely and qualitative supply of PTL and/or information.

Hence questions may arise on various subjects which we envisage to tackle here.

  1. What is the lowest porosity which Bekaert can supply?

    arrow

We can provide a minimum porosity of 45 %.

  2. What are the benefits of AEM?

    arrow

Lower cost, use of abundant metals, and high-purity hydrogen production.

    Read more about it here.

  3. What is Stainless Steel alloy 316L?

    arrow

Grade 1.4404 or 316L is an austenitic stainless steel type AISI 316 which has very good corrosion resistance due to its high chromium and molybdenum content combined with a low carbon content.

  4. Can the thickness be adapted to fit the cell design?

    arrow

Our standard portfolio is available in the following thickness range:

    • (Pt coated) Titanium PTL: 0,15 - 0,50 mm | 5.9 - 19.7 µin
    • Stainless Steel PTL: 0,26 mm | 10.2 µin
    • Nickel PTL: 0,10 - 0,50 mm | 3.9 - 19.7 µin

You can request a quote on our website.

For commercial projects the thickness can be adapted, but this will have an impact on porosity.

  5. Does the coating affect porosity?

    arrow

No, the platinum coating maintains porosity and surface characteristics.

  6. What makes PEM ideal for hydrogen production?

    arrow

It offers high efficiency and compact design, suitable for mobility and industrial use.

  7. Are nickel alloys available?

    arrow

Yes, we offer Inconel and Hastalloy (HR) alloys for enhanced performance.

  8. What are the tolerances on dimensions, length, width and thickness?

    arrow

The standard tolerances which are applicable to the dimensions of our sample materials: ± 4mm.

For commercial projects, we have custom cutting technologies with tolerances of ± 0,5 mm and a thickness tolerance of ± 10%.

  9. What product dimensions are available?

    arrow

    Limiting to standard products:

    • 210 x 290 mm
    • 430 x 580 mm

You can request a quote on our website.

Larger and custom sizes are available for industrial quantities. Please contact us with your questions.

  10. What is the grade of the materials being used?

    arrow

    Titanium: Grade 1

    Nickel: Grade 200

    Stainless steel: AISI 316L

  11. Why add platinum to titanium PTLs?

    arrow

Platinum reduces contact resistance and protects against oxide buildup in acidic PEM environments.

  12. Which coating technology is used for platinum (Pt) coating?

    arrow

Currently we offer electroplating technology as the only option for platinum coating.

Our R&D team is actively investigating the durability of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) technology.

  13. Can the titanium PTL be coated with platinum?

    arrow

Yes, we offer platinum coatings (200 nm nominal thickness) to reduce contact resistance and improve performance.

  14. Does Bekaert offer Nickel foam and/or powder?

    arrow

Currently we do not offer nickel (Ni) foam or nickel (Ni) powder.

  15. Why is nickel used in AEM electrolysis?

    arrow

Nickel is corrosion-resistant in alkaline environments and offers excellent conductivity at a lower cost than noble metals.

  16. Can the Titanium products be coated with Platinum (Pt) or Gold (Au)?

    arrow

We provide protective, double-sided platinum coatings with a standard coating thickness of 200 nm nominal.

Custom coating specifications are available for industrial quantities
