Strengthening Szczecin-Goleniów Airport: reinforced concrete pavement for long-term durability

Project type:

  • Road

Application:

  • Asphalt pavement (123.000 m²)

  • General contractor: Budimex S.A.
  • Owner: Port Lotniczy Szczecin Goleniów Sp. z o.o.

The Szczecin-Goleniów Airport required a durable solution to address the extensive cracking on a 2.5 km section of its runway and adjacent taxiway. The existing pavement suffered significant damage, prompting the airport authorities to seek a long-term, cost-effective solution. Budimex S.A., the general contractor, collaborated with us to implement Mesh Track® as the primary reinforcement to prevent reflective cracking.

The challenge: fast, effective reinforcement to minimize downtime

Closing a runway for renovation results in reduced air traffic, directly impacting revenue. Therefore, the airport authorities needed a solution that was not only quick and easy to apply but also provided robust, long-term protection against reflective cracking. The goal was to ensure the reinforced concrete pavement could withstand the demands of continuous air traffic over its service life.

“The airport needed a fast solution that would provide reliable protection for the entire service life of the pavement,” explained a representative from Budimex. “This meant finding a reinforcement that could be applied quickly, while also offering the durability needed to prevent future issues.”

The solution: Mesh Track® – reinforced concrete pavement that lasts

Budimex proposed using Mesh Track® for the project, convinced it was the most reliable method to protect against reflective cracking over the long term. Mesh Track® is designed to reinforce the entire pavement, not just the joints, significantly enhancing the sectional area’s durability. The initial plan was to reinforce 35,000 m², but after careful consideration, the decision was made to extend the reinforcement to cover the entire 123,000 m² of runway and taxiway.

“By reinforcing the entire length of the runway, rather than just the joints, we ensured greater stability and reduced the risk of cracks propagating through the pavement,” noted the Budimex representative. “The technical support from Bekaert was invaluable. Their calculations demonstrated that reinforcing the entire area was the best option for long-term performance.”

The benefits: extended pavement life with full-length reinforcement

The decision to use Mesh Track® for the entire runway and taxiway resulted in a significant improvement in the pavement’s performance. By reinforcing the entire length, the pavement now offers better protection against reflective cracking and greater resistance to the stresses of air traffic loading. This approach ensures that the runway will maintain its structural integrity over time, extending its service life and reducing the need for future repairs.

Mesh Track® provided the necessary tensile strength and stability to the pavement, effectively managing the stresses caused by air traffic. Also, the reinforced concrete pavement offers cost-effectiveness by reducing maintenance needs and enhancing the longevity of the runway.
