Airport runways need renovation at least every 30 years to assure safe take-off and landing. This project involved the renovation of seven runways at Brussels Airport.

Pierre Biesemans, Service Manager for Surface Maintenance at The Brussels Airport Company, shares insights into the challenges faced and how Mesh Track® provided an effective concrete road reinforcement solution.

The challenge: rapid renovation for busy runways

The runways at Brussels Airport were showing signs of wear, with concrete slabs beginning to crack both horizontally and vertically. The joints were also crumbling, posing a safety risk. With seven runways needing renovation and a tight schedule to minimize disruption to air traffic, there was no time for a full replacement of the slabs. The airport needed a durable structural renovation that could be implemented quickly.

“The concrete slabs were deteriorating, especially at the joints,” Biesemans explains. “We needed to renovate all seven runways as quickly as possible to support our busy air traffic. There wasn’t enough time for full slab replacements. We required a solution that was both fast and durable.”

The solution: fast, effective concrete road reinforcement

"Mesh Track® was selected for its ability to provide rapid, durable reinforcement. Unlike traditional methods, which require at least 28 days for concrete to harden, Mesh Track® allows for the swift placement of reinforcement, enabling teams to install up to 10,000 m² per day. This speed was crucial for keeping the airport operational during the renovation.

“Mesh Track® promises fast work with minimal traffic disruption,” Biesemans notes. “Mobilmat shared references showing that pavements reinforced with Mesh Track® remained in excellent condition for 10 to 15 years with little to no need for further renovation. This gave us confidence in its long-term effectiveness.”

The decision was made to use Mesh Track® to reinforce all seven runways. The system’s ability to strengthen the sectional area of the concrete slabs and enhance the pavement’s resistance to traffic loading and environmental stress was key to extending the service life of the runways.

The benefits: durable runways with long-term cost effectiveness

Using Mesh Track® for the runway renovation provided Brussels Airport with several benefits. The reinforcement system effectively addressed the cracks and crumbling joints, ensuring that the concrete road could withstand the demands of continuous air traffic. The project’s success in reinforcing the runways without a full slab replacement demonstrated significant cost effectiveness.

Mesh Track® also minimized the need for future maintenance. By reinforcing the concrete pavement, the system helped prevent the propagation of cracks – extending the service life of the runways and reducing long-term costs.

The project stands as a model for effective, long-term infrastructure reinforcement in busy airport environments.
