Reinforcing the future of Warsaw Chopin Airport with Mesh Track®

Project type:

  • Airport

Application:

  • Asphalt pavement

Partners:

  • Consultant: Instytut Techniczny Wojsk Lotniczych (ITWL)
  • General contractor: Budimex S.A. (via Gruppo Bitumi)
  • Owner: Porty Lotnicze
  • Partner: Gruppo Bitumi

The project focused on renovating a runway and adjacent taxiway, along with constructing two new roads for maintenance and patrol vehicles. The National Group of Polish Airports, Porty Lotnicze, needed a solution that promised long-term performance with minimal upkeep. Mesh Track® was chosen for its proven reliability, continuing the successful collaboration between us and Budimex.

The challenge: speed meets strength

Renovating Warsaw Chopin Airport posed a significant challenge: completing the project within a tight schedule without compromising on quality. The new asphalt layers had to endure heavy traffic and constant stress for decades.

“Our work needed to be fast yet flawless, ensuring the airport’s operations were uninterrupted,” noted a representative from Budimex. “We required a pavement reinforcement solution that would last under heavy use for over 30 years.”

The solution: Mesh Track® – the hidden strength in paved surfaces

Our road reinforcement, Mesh Track®, was the preferred solution. This steel-based woven netting is designed for robust road construction and renovation. It provides the necessary strength to support high-traffic areas while being quick and easy to install.

“Mesh Track® has been our go-to for several runway projects,” the Budimex representative explained. “It delivers long-term performance and works well with both rigid and flexible pavement designs. It achieves this while being quick and easy to work with.”

With Mesh Track®, the team reinforced about 90,000 m² of the airport’s asphalt layers, significantly enhancing load transfer and reducing the risk of cracks. This reinforcement is crucial for extending the service life of the runway and taxiway, ensuring they remain durable under constant traffic loading.

The benefits: verified for long-term success

To guarantee Mesh Track® met the rigorous demands of airport use, our partner in Poland, Gruppo Bitumi, collaborated with ITWL for thorough testing. The product passed with flying colors, earning certification for airport applications.

Using Mesh Track® improved the tensile strength of the pavement and acted as a moisture barrier, protecting the asphalt layers. This innovation reduces maintenance needs, ensuring the pavement roads at Warsaw Chopin Airport can withstand the pressures of daily use.

The Warsaw Chopin Airport renovation showcases Mesh Track® as a powerful ally in demanding environments. Its ease of use, combined with proven durability, makes it a key player in projects that require speed and strength. By choosing Mesh Track®, Warsaw Chopin Airport has built a strong foundation for future operations, emphasizing safety, efficiency, and long-term resilience.
